Strengthening Orgs, Increasing Impact

At Building For Mission, we help organizations unlock the potential of their people. These stories share what that looks like in practice.

Self Help Credit Union | Financial Services

Services: Org Design, Workforce Planning and Talent Aquisition Strategy The Challenge

The Challenge

As Self-Help Credit Union expanded its impact and diversified its strategies, the organization faced growing complexity. Self-Help needed to re-structure key departments to align with their strategic shifts and to develop a scalable, and integrated approach to talent acquisition.

BFM’s Process

BFM partnered with Self-Help on two critical fronts: redesigning the talent acquisition system (appx 200 hires/year) and restructuring a key department to align with future goals.

We began by assessing historical hiring trends, recruiter capacity, and integration efforts. Using internal data, focus group input, and equity benchmarks, we delivered a roadmap for a more effective and mission-aligned hiring process. This included job-type-specific data tracking, clearer workflows, and strengthened recruiter support.

In parallel, we facilitated a department-level restructuring effort. Through a series of virtual strategy sessions, we helped leadership clarify team priorities, assess talent needs, and explore org structure options. Together, we co-created a “Pathway to Change”—an actionable plan with hiring recommendations, implementation tools, and communications guidance to support staff through the transition.

The Impact

Our work laid the foundation for a more transparent, aligned, and equitable approach to talent. The engagement improved clarity on hiring capacity, positioned a key department for growth, and strengthened Self-Help’s ability to scale its mission of economic justice with the right people in the right roles.

In Their Words

“BFM brought structure and clarity to complex conversations. Their facilitation helped us move forward while ensuring all voices were heard.”

“What stood out was how deeply the BFM team listened. Their guidance was practical because they took the time to truly understand our organizational reality.”

“Tamika brought a wise balance of pragmatism and vision — grounding us in what’s possible while staying true to our mission.”

“Natalie’s facilitation was excellent — responsive, engaged, and collaborative. She made space for feedback and adapted in real time to keep us on track.”

“BFM created a thoughtful, well-paced process. They navigated the tension between honoring diverse perspectives and moving toward action with skill and empathy.”

BoardSource | Executive Leadership Development & Capacity Building

Services: Executive Team Coaching + People Manager Learning Series

The Challenge

In preparation for a CEO transition, BoardSource needed to build leadership capacity at multiple levels. Their goals were twofold: equip the executive team to lead collaboratively—regardless of who was at the helm—and strengthen people managers’ ability to lead teams effectively during a moment of organizational change.

BFM’s Process

BFM designed a two-pronged engagement: a 10-session executive team coaching series and a custom six-part learning series for ~20 people managers.

The executive team sessions focused on deepening collaboration, clarifying shared leadership practices, and strengthening communication. For people managers, we offered interactive trainings on feedback, coaching, team development, and leading through change. Each manager received a digital workbook with tools and frameworks designed for long-term use.

Throughout the engagement, we ensured alignment across both tracks by tailoring content to reflect the organization’s evolving needs—and by creating space for real-time reflection and dialogue.

Engagement Outcomes

The learning series earned an average session rating of 4.9/5 and an overall client satisfaction rating of 6.4/7. Two years later, the CEO transition has been successful, and the full executive team remains in place—demonstrating strong leadership continuity and organizational resilience.

In Their Words

“This was the first manager training where I felt like I truly learned something. I could practice with peers, reflect, and feel heard.”

Community Health Centers | Non-Profit Healthcare

Services: Strategic Planning, Change Management, Community Organizing Learning Series

The Challenge

As community health centers expand their commitment to power-building and patient-centered advocacy, associations must evolve their strategies to reflect this shift. Many need support strengthening the leadership skills required to implement these changes and ensuring alignment between emerging national goals and existing state-level strategies. The challenge lies in not only rolling out new approaches—but doing so in ways that build capacity, foster ownership, and preserve alignment across a complex ecosystem.

BFM’s Process

BFM partnered with CHC leaders at the state and national level to strengthen leadership, organizing, and strategy. Our work included:

  • Organizing Learning Series: We designed and delivered interactive training that built core organizing skills—such as public narrative, campaign strategy, and relationship-building—among frontline staff, board members, and advocates.

  • Train-the-Trainer Models: In several states, we created replicable training models to embed these practices sustainably within member organizations.

  • Strategic Retreats and Planning: We facilitated retreats and planning sessions that engaged diverse stakeholders in reflecting on past impact, surfacing priorities, and co-creating future-facing strategies.

  • Leadership Development: Through keynotes, workshops, and coaching, we supported CHC leaders in strengthening hiring, alignment, and trust across teams—all with an eye toward equity and resilience.

We also provided implementation support through coaching and tailored tools, ensuring that plans moved from insight to action.

Engagement Outcomes

Our support helped CHC associations build momentum toward deeper alignment across local and national strategies, foster more inclusive and resilient internal cultures, and increase organizing capacity at every level. This work contributed to the field’s long-term vision: building power in communities to protect access to care and advance equity in health policy

In Their Words

“This training was long overdue — BFM’s facilitation was both engaging and impactful. I walked away with a comprehensive story and tools I’ll bring back to build advocacy capacity across our team.”

“BFM’s values come through in everything they do. Their support was mission-aligned, people-centered, and deeply respectful of our work.”

“The BFM team was incredibly organized and communicative, which allowed us to stay focused on the work without needing to manage the process. That’s rare — and invaluable — for a small association like ours.”

“Flexible, thoughtful, and steady in the face of complexity. Natalie, in particular, went above and beyond to build trust and ensure a successful engagement on a tight timeline.”

“BFM made our team feel both supported and empowered. They really took the time to understand our mission — and it showed in every step of the work.”
